Welcome to my new author blog! If you’re here, you might have seen my debut novel, The Middle Swipe Crisis, and wondered where it came from. The short answer is that it came from my phone. The long answer is a bit more complicated.
Every book begins with a question. For some epics, it’s “What if a magic ring could destroy the world?” For my book, the question was a little different: “Did that person’s dating profile really just list ‘expert napper’ as their only personality trait?”
A little while ago, my life went through a full system restore. Fresh from a divorce, I was thrown back into a world I barely recognised. By day, I was juggling my career and life as a dad. By night, I was trying to decipher the weird, wonderful, and often-frustrating world of modern dating.
It felt like learning a new sport where the rules were nonsensical and everyone was making them up as they went along. The profile pictures were a sea of women on mountains they definitely only climbed once, and selfies taken from an angle that defied physics. The conversations were a bizarre mix of over-the-top enthusiasm and one-word replies. I got ghosted, breadcrumbed, and sent texts that were so strange they felt like performance art.
There was one particular evening, after a date that was memorably awkward, that I found myself just staring at my phone. I wasn't just frustrated; I was fascinated. The whole experience was so absurd, so funny, and so deeply human. It was a story about more than just dating; it was about starting over, figuring out who you are when your life’s script gets a major rewrite, and trying to find a genuine connection in an increasingly digital world.
It was a story I felt compelled to tell. So, in between work deadlines and school runs, I started writing. I poured the chaos, the comedy, and the cringeworthy moments into what would eventually become The Middle Swipe Crisis. My protagonist's journey mirrors that feeling of being caught between wanting a real partnership and just trying to survive the sheer madness of the dating pool, all while holding down the rest of your life.
This book is for anyone who has ever stared at their phone and thought, you can’t make this stuff up. It’s a story born from real-life absurdity, for anyone who needs a laugh and a reminder that we’re all just trying to figure it out.
